Monster Truck companies use BKT Tyres, an Indian Tyre Brand

Things you didn’t know about India’s Tyre Manufacturing companies

BKT stands for Balkrishna Industries Limited, is an Indian multinational tyre manufacturing company based in Mumbai, India. You might have seen them in advertisements related to tractor tyres. But an Indian tyre brand in competitions like Monster Jams might be a bit surprising for all of us. Let’s dive into it!

What are these Monster Trucks?

A monster truck is a specialized off-road vehicle with a heavy duty suspension, four-wheel steering, large-displacement V8 engines and oversized tires constructed for competition and entertainment uses.

Originally they were modified Pick-up trucks or SUVs. With the rising competition, soon the custom manufacturing started growing.

At the core of every monster truck competition you get to see come cool jumps, summer-salts, front flips, jaw dropping maneuvers performed by these 6 ton monsters.

Now let’s understand India’s Tyre market and how BKT reached Monster Truck competitions

Tyre manufacturing started in India in the year 1926 by Dunlop Rubber Limited which was founded in the year 1888 in Ireland. No major company stepped in until 1952. The scenarios changed after MRF or Madras Rubber Factory entered the field of rubber tyre manufacturing.

Many other companies started to flourish after the Independence, one amongst them was BKT. BKT’s background can be traced back to 1954 when a visionary entrepreneur, Mahabirprasad Poddar, started manufacturing bicycle tyres to provide mobility opportunities to a newly independent India. In 1987, the company was founded as BKT, which was established as a true tyre manufacturer, focusing on becoming a global leader in the off-highway tyre market.

India’s tyre industry was evaluated at USD 9.27 Billion in the year 2023 and has a stunning CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) of 8.41% and thus would reach over USD 15 Billion by 2029. Whereas we also did exports worth USD 2.7 Billion in 2023

According to a list generated by tyrepress.com in 2023. Out of the 6 major tyre manufacturing companies in India, 5 made it into the top 30 worldwide in terms of revenue. BKT stands at 29th position worldwide, the list also includes companies like Apollo Tyres at number 13 and MRF at number 16.

One of the important factors for the rapid growth of tyre manufacturing is said to be the availability of natural rubber in India.

BKT’s involvement in Off-Highway Tyre Markets

The company’s main specialization now is the production of off-highway tyres designed for machinery used in areas like agriculture, which includes tractors, combines, and other vehicles; construction – earthmovers, loaders, and dump trucks; mining – heavy-duty vehicles for transporting goods and earth-moving and many more industrial vehicles.

BKT tyres quickly gained a reputation for delivering exceptional performance on rugged terrain and challenging environments. Their ability to provide reliable traction, durability, and control under demanding conditions made them a preferred choice amongst off-highway vehicle companies and owners and even Monster trucks

BKT has become one of the market leaders precisely thanks to its focus on tyre technology in these areas. The company’s presence is great; its production facilities are in India, but its subsidiaries, sales offices, and dealers are in all the continents.

“We at BKT realize how the motorsport industry has evolved,” says Arvind Poddar - Chairman & Managing Director. “Our goal is always to produce tyres that not only perform extraordinarily but that can attend to the ever-changing needs of off-road racing — particularly those related to sustainability.” BKT’s motorsport strategy is based on two hallmarks: agility and innovation. Being physically proximal to racing teams and drivers enables the company to collect relevant feedback on the spot and stay up-to-date with the latest developments. Hence, BKT’s tyres are always current in the market.

BKT relishes one of the prevalent innovations regarding innovation.

BKT engineers continuously investigate new materials, tread patterns, and construction procedures to build tyres with improved performance and reliability, all while remaining the most efficient. “We want to manufacture tires that can exceed the most torturous off-road conditions and are aerodynamic,” says Vipul Shah - Whole Time Director & Company Secretary, another BKT trench who is an expert in tyre technology. “It provides our clients with a substantial advantage.”

Conclusion

While BKT may not be a traditional motorsport powerhouse, its dominance in the Off-Highway Tire (OHT) market is creating a seismic shift. Their robust OHTs, designed to conquer the harshest terrains, are finding a growing fan base in various off-road racing disciplines.

And surely with time, we will find BKT dominating across many other categories. Not just BKT but India’s tyre market is performing fabulously with lots of hope for an even better future.
